The International French School in Tokyo organised a tea ceremony following an important donation of tea utensils from the Cross City Rotary Club.
The morning began on the main campus with a presentation ceremony. Guests included Mr TSUBAKI, President of the Cross City Rotary Club and former Kita City Assembly member, Kita City Mayor YAMADA Kana, Assembly member TAKAGI Kei, and members of the Rotary Club.
Principal Alexandre BERENGER, Director of Administration and Finance Morad DAHMANE, members of staff and 15 CM2 SIJ pupils also took part.
The tea ceremony was then held in the dedicated tea room on the annex campus. Mr YOSHIMORI and Ms HIKARI, who have taught tea ceremony at the school for several years, presented a traditional tea service to the guests.
The CM2 SIJ pupils helped welcome and serve the guests. This gave them the opportunity to discover the gestures and traditions of the tea ceremony through direct experience.
Seasonal flowers, incense, traditional utensils and wagashi from Baikatei in Kagurazaka accompanied the ceremony. A calligraphy scroll written more than 400 years ago by Emperor Go-Mizunoo was also displayed.
Tea ceremony introduces pupils to many aspects of Japanese culture, including calligraphy, flower arrangement, incense, traditional clothing, history and consideration for others.
The donation will help the school continue and develop these cultural activities for pupils.
The International French School in Tokyo warmly thanks the Cross City Rotary Club for its support and for helping to pass on Japanese culture to younger generations.
