“My child doesn’t speak French. Is that a problem?”

Not necessarily.

Although French is the principal language of instruction, not every student joining LFI Tokyo is a native French speaker.

Students arrive with very different linguistic backgrounds.

• Some speak French at home.
• Some have attended another French school abroad.
• Others are bilingual or multilingual.
• And some begin their journey at LFI Tokyo with little or no French.

Depending on a student’s age, previous schooling, language proficiency and individual situation, specific support in French as a Language of Schooling (FLSco) may be available to help newly arrived students progressively acquire the language needed for learning.

Language acquisition is approached as a structured educational journey.

The objective is not simply to teach conversational French.

Students progressively develop the vocabulary, comprehension, reading, writing and academic language required to participate fully and confidently in school life.

Every child’s situation is different.

For this reason, families are encouraged to discuss their child’s linguistic and academic background directly with our admissions team.

We can help you understand which pathway may be appropriate before you make your decision.

“I am a parent and I don’t speak French”

That should not prevent you from considering LFI Tokyo.

We know that choosing an international school also means choosing an institution with which parents need to communicate confidently.

Our administrative teams can accompany families in French, English and Japanese.

From an initial enquiry to admissions, school-life information and practical questions, our objective is to make communication clear and accessible.

Parents should be able to understand their child’s educational environment regardless of whether French is spoken at home.

A first meeting or campus visit can therefore be conducted without requiring parents to speak French.

What is the French education system ?

The French curriculum is a structured national education system designed to provide students with strong foundations across a broad range of disciplines.

From the earliest years, children are encouraged not only to acquire knowledge but also to understand, explain, question, reason and express themselves clearly.

The curriculum places particular emphasis on language, mathematics, science, history and geography, literature, humanities, arts, physical education and citizenship.

Academic rigour is combined with intellectual curiosity.

Rather than specialising too early, students develop a broad academic culture before progressively shaping their individual pathway.

LFI Tokyo is part of the worldwide network of French international schools coordinated by the AEFE — Agence pour l’enseignement français à l’étranger.

In 2026, this network includes 640 schools in 140 countries and more than 400,000 students.

All schools belonging to this network follow programmes recognised by the French Ministry of Education within the scope of their accreditation.

This creates something particularly valuable for internationally mobile families: educational continuity.

A student moving between France and an accredited French school abroad — or between schools in the international French education network — remains within a coherent academic framework.

Choosing the French curriculum does not mean choosing France as your child’s only future destination.

Our students are prepared to consider higher education in France, Japan and around the world.

At upper-secondary level, students build an individual academic profile according to their interests, strengths and future plans.

They receive guidance as they explore universities, programmes and application procedures.

The French Baccalauréat provides access to higher education in France and is widely recognised by universities internationally, subject to the individual admission requirements of each institution.

For internationally oriented students, the Baccalauréat Français International (BFI) provides an especially demanding multilingual and intercultural pathway.

The objective is simple : to give students the academic foundations, languages, autonomy and confidence required to choose their future rather than have it chosen for them.

French, English and Japanese : languages at the heart of the school

Living in Tokyo while attending an international school should not mean living outside Japan.

This conviction shapes our language policy.

French, English and Japanese form the three major pillars of the linguistic journey offered at LFI Tokyo.

Students encounter languages according to their age, proficiency and educational pathway.

Japanese can be taught through programmes adapted to different profiles, including students for whom Japanese is a native language, the language of the host country or a foreign language.

English also occupies an important position throughout the curriculum.

At secondary level, further languages such as German and Spanish may be available.

Depending on age, level and admission conditions, these include enhanced English or Japanese programmes, as well as Japanese and American International Sections.

At upper-secondary level, eligible students may pursue the Baccalauréat Français International.
